Haitians Challenge Monsanto's Influence

Hinche, Haiti - Last week, thousands of farmers and supporters of Haitian peasant agriculture marched for hours under the hot Caribbean sun to call for more government support for locally grown seeds and agriculture.

The demonstration was organized by the Peasant Movement of Papay and other farmer associations, human rights and women’s groups, and the Haitian Platform for Alternative Development (PAPDA), the Haitian online agency AlterPresse reported from the march. The official theme of the peaceful demonstration was “Land Grabbing is Endangering Agricultural Sovereignty.”

Singing slogans like “Long Live Haitian Agriculture!” and “Long live local seeds!” the crowd – wearing straw hats and red T-shirts – wound its way on foot, donkeys, and bikes through this dusty provincial capital. The demonstration ended at a square named for farmer Charlemagne Péralte, who lead the “Caco” peasant revolt against the U.S. army occupation from 1916 until 1919, when U.S. Marines assassinated him.

One year ago, thousands of farmers covered the same march route to protest the import of a “gift” of seeds from Monsanto. The farmers burned some of the seeds, calling them a “death plan” for peasant agriculture.

Last spring, in violation of Haitian law, the Minister of Agriculture gave the agribusiness giant Monsanto permission to “donate” 505 tons of seeds to Haiti. The first shipment of 60 tons, reportedly of maize and vegetable seeds, arrived in May 2010. Some of the seeds were coated with a chemical (Thiram)[1] so toxic that the EPA forbids its sale to home gardeners in the U.S.. Monsanto announced its $4 million gift was “to support the reconstruction effort” in Haiti.

What has become of the seeds that Monsanto gave?  And how real was the fear of Haitian farmer organizations that the donation was a Trojan horse?

Haiti Grassroots Watch explored the impacts in a three-month investigation, “Seeding Reconstruction or Destruction?”and “Monsanto in Haiti.” Excerpts from the report follow.

Connections

In Haiti, a US Agency for International Development (USAID)-funded agricultural project accepted the Monsanto “gift.” USAID/WINNER (Watershed Initiative for National Natural Environmental Resources) is a five-year, $126 million US taxpayer-funded agriculture and environment program. WINNER is run by giant beltway contractor Chemonics International, which in 2010 ranked #51 on the list of top 100 US government contractors in the world, earning over $476 million in contacts that year.

USAID/WINNER’s Chief of Party is Jean Robert Estimé, minister of Foreign Affairs under dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier.

Unlawful Entry

In its post-earthquake strategy document, the Haitian Ministry of Agriculture called for massive seed distribution – covering 30 percent of farmers’ needs – for three seasons post-earthquake, and gave its warm approval of the Monsanto “gift.” This is even though allowing new varieties (the maize and most of the vegetable varieties) onto Haitian soil directly contravenes Haitian law and international conventions… which aim to protect the gene pool and the ecosystem in general.

The Ministry of Agriculture issued a list of “approved” seed varieties in March. None of the maize varieties on the list are hybrids.

Asked by Haiti Grassroots Watch about the fact that new varieties posed a threat to Haitian biodiversity, and that seeds and other plants and animals are being imported into Haiti without control, Ministry of Agriculture Director of National Seed Services Emmanuel Prophete admitted that the Ministry does not have the power to control the borders.

“We are supposed to have a quarantine system, and all seeds should be tested for germination and adaptation before they are distributed,” Prophete conceded in an interview earlier this year. “We don’t have the power to do that at this time.”

Asked about the introduction of the Monsanto hybrid seeds onto Haitian soil, Francesco Del Re of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) would not directly condemn the “gift” seeds. But, he noted, for its emergency seed distributions, the FAO-led “Agriculture Cluster” imported only the seeds on [the government approval] list, “for a very precise reasons, because the hybrids need to be renewed every year and do have to be bought by peasants every year.”

Asked if the FAO attempted to block the Ministry or the USAID/WINNER program from importing and distributed seeds, Del Re said: “We gave advice. That is what we did. Afterwards, naturally, we are not the national police, so we can’t verify everything, everywhere, but we did all we could do… I agree with the philosophy that we discussed with the Ministry and that we put into place with them. Afterwards, if other partners make other choices, that is their responsibility.”

 

Dangers of Introducing Untested Seeds in Emergency Context

In a May 13 news release, Monsanto announced: “Haitian farmers, who otherwise may not have had sufficient seeds to plant this season [Haiti Grassroots Watch emphasis] in their earthquake-ravaged country, are receiving help from a unique public and private partnership.”

Except… Haitian farmers did have enough seed to plant that season, according to several reports.

Monsanto’s “gift” announcement came a full two months after the Catholic Relief Service (CRS) – which has extensive experience in Haitian agriculture development work – released a “rapid seed assessment” report [PDF] for southern Haiti, one of the areas worst-hit by the earthquake. The assessment, circulated to humanitarian and development organizations working in Haiti, recommended against the importation and distribution of seeds. CRS wrote: “Direct seed distribution should not take place given that seed is available in the local market and farmers’ negative perceptions of external seed. This emergency is not the appropriate time to try to introduce improved varieties on anything more than a small scale for farmer evaluation. [our emphasis]”

 

A multi-agency seed security study shepherded by International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) in the spring and summer of 2010 warned that “one should never introduce varieties in an emergency context which have not been tested in the given agro-ecological site and under farmers’ management conditions.”

Reached in January 2011, principal CIAT researcher Louise Sperling noted that most hybrids require extra water and better soils, and that most of Haiti was not appropriate for maize hybrids. While not opposed to the use of hybrids – when there is adequate training, irrigation, fertilizer, and when farmers can afford to replace them – she said she was concerned that “the hybrids being promoted have never been tested extensively on-farm” in Haiti.

And, she asked, “What if the technology fails? And, if [farmers] want to buy the seed again, where will it be available and at what price?”

 

Dependence

At least some of the peasant farmer groups receiving Monsanto and other hybrid maize and other cereal seeds have little understanding of the implications of getting “hooked” on hybrid seeds. (Most Haitian farmers select seeds from their own harvests.) One of the USAID/WINNER trained extension agents told Haiti Grassroots Watch that in his region, farmers won’t need to save seeds anymore: “They don’t have to kill themselves like before. They can plant, harvest, sell or eat. They don’t have to save seeds anymore because they know they will get seeds from the [WINNER-subsidized] store.”

When it was pointed out that WINNER’s subsidies end when the project ends in four years, he had no logical response.

Director of National Seed Service Prophete told Haiti Grassroots Watch that when peasants get improved seed varieties, production rises, but “the system is based on a subsidy… You have to ask yourself about the sustainability because if the policy changes one day, where will peasants get seeds?... We’ll get to a point where, one day, we have a lot of seeds, and then suddenly, when all the NGOs are gone, we won’t have any.”

 

Promoting the Product, Regardless of Risk

According to its website, one of WINNER’s goals is to help farmers “increase their productivity and to double their incomes in five years” through the use of better irrigation and techniques, and by using better seeds, fertilizers, and other inputs provided at only a tenth the of actual cost through “Farmer’s Stores” run by local farmers organizations.

One USAID/WINNER staff person passed on an internal document to the journalists. “Preliminary Report on the seed donation of hybrid maize and vegetable seeds from MONSANTO” revealing USAID/WINNER’s intent. According to the document, “Despite a whole media campaign [by grassroots organizations and “political leaders”] against hybrids under the cover of GMO/Agent Orange/Round Up, the seeds were used almost everywhere, the true message got through, although not at the level hoped for [emphasis added].”

The report continues, “We are in the process of working as quickly as possible with farmers to increase as much as possible the use of hybrid seeds in the plain areas where it is possible to give them technical support.”

Even though most of the internally displaced people (66 percent) had returned to cities by mid-June, seed distributions continued throughout 2010 and into 2011. When CIAT researcher Sperling learned of this in March, 2011, she told Haiti Grassroots Watch, “Direct seed aid – when not needed, and given repetitively – does real harm. It undermines local systems, creates dependencies and stifles real commercial sector development.”

Sperling added that some humanitarian actors “seem to see delivering seed aid as easy and they welcome the overhead (money) – even if their actions may hurt poor farmers.”

 

Dangers to Humans and the Environment

At least some of the farmer groups interviewed don’t appear to understand the health and environmental risks involved with the fungicide- and herbicide-coated hybrids. Until Haiti Grassroots Watch intervened, some farmers were planning to grind up the toxic seed to use as chicken feed.

In one of our sites of investigation, the Farmers’ Store is actually a room in a community building that was unlocked and unstaffed on at least one Haiti Grassroots Watch visit. The building is located in a neighborhood full of families with children.

Inside the room, sacks of sorghum and maize seeds, bags of fertilizer and boxes of seeds are all jumbled into a huge pile. Some of the sacks are labeled, others are not. Several open bags from Monsanto/DeKalb in Brazil spill bright pink, chemically coated maize seeds onto the floor. Other maize seeds are in unlabeled white sacks which are punctured with holes… made by rats? Children? The farmers? That seed is covered with a white powder.

A half-empty bag of Pioneer seeds, also presumably hybrid, and presumably treated with fungicide and herbicide, sits open. Sunlight streams in through two windows, meaning that airborne Maxim XL, which coats the Monsanto/DeKalb seeds, and other airborne fungicides, pesticides and fertilizers could just as easily stream out. And into the lungs of nearby schoolchildren.

Syngenta, maker of Maxim XL, warns that skin and eye contact, and inhalation, are dangerous. “DO NOT use treated seed for animal or human consumption... DO NOT allow treated seed to contaminate grain or other seed intended for animal or human consumption. DO NOT feed treated seed, or otherwise expose, to wild or domestic birds,” one warning label reads.

Boxes of vegetable seed – presumably from Monsanto but not labeled as such – are jumbled about. Many of the seeds are treated with Thiram. In 2004, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) determined that Thiram cannot be used in home gardens, on apples, or on playing fields. The 260-page report also detailed adverse health effects on humans, noting details like “the chronic toxicity profile for Thiram indicates that the liver, blood and urinary system are the target organs.” Thiram also has “effects” on foraging birds’ reproduction, and thus Thiram-coated seed should not be broadcast on the soil.

There are also bags of Mancozeb. The EPA also looked at Mancozeb recently (2005), saying the fungicide “poses some acute and chronic risks to birds and mammals” and that handlers need to wear full protective clothing, gloves and a “PF 5” respirator.

“Yes, all of this is dangerous. When you use Mancozeb, the farmer needs to wear a face mask, glasses and gloves,” the farmer agreed. “USAID doesn’t give them to us, but we buy them so they are available to the farmers.”

When Haiti Grassroots Watch asked the farmer where the gloves and masks were stored, he looked around under some of the seed sacks. “Well, maybe they ran out but we always buy them and have them here,” he said, hesitantly. “I don’t know exactly where they are.”

The farmer and the journalists thoroughly searched the room. There was no protective gear.

Secrecy

USAID/WINNER keeps a lid on its activities and tightly controls access to its work. Several WINNER employees told Haiti Grassroots Watch that before starting contracts, all staff had an agreement with Chemonics which prohibits their speaking with the media.

Haiti Grassroots Watch repeatedly requested an interview with USAID/WINNER agronomists and officials to follow up on the seed “gift.” Requests were repeatedly denied. In addition, Communications Director Maxwell Marcelin broadcast an email – obtained by Haiti Grassroots Watch – warning: “… a journalist is trying to do a report, including the project USAID/WINNER… I ask you to be very vigilant and, if the case presents itself, do not respond to any question, no matter how simple it seems… It is important to advise us immediately of all incidents, or requests, in order to help us better respond.”

Bilderberg: Where are Real Decisions Being Made?

As the Western elite gathered in picturesque St Moritz to grapple with pressing world crises, the outsiders met in the bleak steppes of Central Asia.

Last week’s 10th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in the Kazakh capital Astana highlighted how the major rivals to empire, led by Russia and China -- themselves rivals, are trying to fashion an alternative to US hegemony.

The SCO is the only major international organisation that has neither the US nor any close US ally among its members, and its influence is growing across Eurasia. Leaders of member states Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan were joined by leaders from observers Iran, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan and Mongolia. Belarus and Sri Lanka have been admitted as dialogue partners, and prior to his arrival in Astana to attend the summit, Chinese President Hu Jintao visited Ukraine.

With a Chinese rhetorical flourish, the Astana Declaration stressed the goal of combatting the "three forces" of "terrorism, extremism, and separatism". The summit called for a "neutral" Afghanistan (read: no permanent US bases), supported by Afghan President Hamid Karzai, even as the US is actively discussing a post-2014 strategic partnership agreement with him. The prospect of permanent US military bases in Afghanistan lies at the core of current US-Pakistan tensions. India has indicated its aversion to "new cold war" tensions appearing in the region.

Russia and China fear that the US plan is to establish permanent bases in Afghanistan and to deploy components of its missile defence system. The SCO meeting supported Russian criticisms of the planned NATO missile defence shield underway in Europe . Plans by "a country or small group of countries unilaterally and without restriction to deploy an anti-missile system could undermine strategic stability and international security".

The summit also called for Afghanistan’s neighbours to play the leading role in improving security and helping to rebuild Afghanistan, rejecting a purely military solution. "It is possible that the SCO will assume responsibility for many issues in Afghanistan after the withdrawal of coalition forces in 2014," said Kazakh President Nurusultan Nazarbayev, echoing Russian President Dmitri Medvedev’s call "for more intensive and deeper cooperation between the SCO and Afghanistan".

Both Beijing and Moscow are already rebuilding their influence there, China in mining, and both countries in infrastructure projects and cooperation with Western forces to combat drug trafficking. "Afghanistan was the main reason the SCO was created 10 years ago, even before 9/11 forced the Americans to recognise the threat," says Duma deputy Sergei Markov. "The threat of radical Islamism being exported into our region is something we’re very familiar with. And a resurgence of that threat has got to be a major concern."

During the conference, the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) signed an accord with the SCO to promote cooperation in fighting drug trafficking, organised crime, human trafficking and international terrorism. UNODC Executive Director Yury Fedotov said, "Countries such as Kazakhstan are on the frontline of the flow of Afghan heroin headed towards the West. The work in countering organised crime and drug trafficking, which I am pleased to see is increasingly taking on a cooperative approach." The most urgent issue is heroin trafficking from Afghanistan via Tajikistan which surged after the 2001 US invasion.

Security cooperation and economic development were described as the "two wheels" of the SCO by its General Secretary Zhang Deguang. China’s People’s Daily noted, "Among other concrete moves is the construction of a railway, highway and pipeline network linking landlocked Central Asia and its rich natural resources to the global economy." Currently a natural gas Pease Pipeline is under construction which could eventually link Iran, Pakistan, India and China, helping to overcome India-Pakistani animosity and integrate the entire region on the basis of mutual interests, carefully shepherded by China.

Central Asian and South Asian security are indivisible, and the proposed memberships of India and Pakistan were seriously discussed. Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari vowed to work with SCO members to achieve regional peace. Zardari stated Pakistan belongs to the SCO region and is keen to cooperate with the other countries in financing joint ventures in energy, infrastructure, education, science and technology. He pointed to its newly opened port at Gwadar, which China helped fund, as a useful transport hub for the region.

The SCO has been increasing security cooperation among its members, including joint Russia-China war games, and beginning in April this year, meetings of military chiefs of the SCO countries. However, the SCO is far from being a cohesive military alliance such as NATO. The admission of Pakistan and India, long term enemies, will only complicate military cooperation, with India's patron Russia vs Pakistan's patron China.

China is clearly the power beyind the SCO, its "wheels" offering the region much more economically than Russia, but the common will of all to keep the US at bay is a balm to all. What better way to ease tensions between all these rivals than through SCO security drills enhancing the inter-operability of militaries and law-enforcement agencies? According to MK Bhadrakumar this will make "NATO (and Pax Americana) simply irrelevant to an entire landmass".

The high-flown words about peace, regional security and cooperation were for the press (and Obama). Behind closed doors, the leaders discussed their growing concerns about how the Arab spring might impact the region, particularly Central Asia’s most populous state and harshest dictatorship – Uzbekistan. The SCO summit is one of the few international events where its leader Islam Karimov is still welcomed.

Another topic at the SCO meeting was how to move towards a new world currency, one established not by world bankers at secretive Bilderberg meetings, but openly, by the major world resource and population centres as represented by the SCO. Nazarbayev said that a healthy supranational currency is needed and recommended a return to some form of gold standard. "The SCO is capable of doing this. The swap operations that we have started is the first step. This is necessary for equal cooperation within the SCO."

Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad provided some colour to the otherwise muted affair with his call for the SCO to take a more active role in undermining the US-led global system of "slavers and colonisers" and replacing it with a more just order. "Which one of our countries [has played a role] in the black era of slavery, or in the destruction of hundreds of millions of human beings? I believe together we can reform the way the world is managed. We can restore the tranquility of the world."

The SCO meeting came days after the close of the Bilderberg Group’s summit in St Moritz Switzerland, which China’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Fu Ying attended this year -- acknowledgment that without China’s approval, nothing is possible in the world of finance anymore. Like the SCO, its agenda reportedly also included what to do about the Arab spring, but also, in a more sinister vein, plans for internet censorhip, choosing the next IMF chief, more Euro-bailouts and higher oil prices.

China, Russia, Pakistan, India -- not to mention Iran -- the SCO brings together the most serious threats to the empire’s plans in one clutch. With the possible exception of China, Bush didn’t take any of them seriously. Obama does. But so far, the SCO has been more bark than bite. If by this time next year, India and Pakistan are admitted, and if non-dollar denominated "swaps" reach a critical mass, Bilderberg may well have to put the SCO and what to do about it at the top of its next agenda.

The Summer Solstice has arrived north of the Equator where it is time to breathe, relax, be sensual, and to become fully embodied. South of the Equator, it is the Winter Solstice where it is time to assess what you've created during the year, especially to consider your Spring Equinox intentions made during September 2010. [This site is written for readers who live north of the Equator, so those down south will need to switch your comprehension of the influences of the solstices accordingly.]

 

For those of us living in the north, our spring coincided with the opening stages of the Universal Underworld on March 9 (hereinafter the Universal). Experiencing the Days and Nights of the Universal during only 18 days is causing great changes in our personal and collective lives. Thus, letting go and relaxing will be difficult this summer. For most people, it's been hard not to be totally distracted with so much going on, so it could be easy to miss this summer's potential to flesh out and deepen what we've been creating since March. Yet, remember, you create your own reality, and the events in the outer world are deeply connected and inspired by what's in your minds. Please take a look at your Spring Equinox intentions to assess how you are doing now, and also take note of the things that are popping into your life that you didn't even plan on. During such intense time acceleration, chaos is breaking out everywhere, since chaos is always part of new creation: The reorganization of the fractal fields creates exceedingly unexpected new things in your life.

 

We are in the middle of three eclipses from June 1 through July 1, 2011. The June 1 eclipse occurred during the Day Three sprouting phase of the Universal. Regarding the financial crisis, on June 1 (the first eclipse), the European Union Times published an astonishing story about the real reason the president of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Khan, was arrested by the Federal Security Bureau in New York on May 14 for supposedly having attacked a hotel maid. Apparently, Strauss-Khan discovered that Fort Knox has been emptied of all its gold bars, which are the basis of US drawing rights in international banks, and he was trying to fly back immediately to Europe to meet with the German President, Angela Merkel! My reading for the March equinox suggested that the Universal would unfold amid an explosion of chaos: The equinox Sun in 0 Aries moved right to Uranus in 1 Aries soon after the equinox. Many planets were in Aries throughout the spring, so this hot astrological influence was right in tandem with the Mayan Calendar as usual. Many of you are feeling quite disturbed and distressed right now, and during such great change, I find that deep reflection on personal growth in light of events in the collective world is essential. As humans, we keep our sanity by maintaining some kind of logical explanation for what's going on in our world, and Carl Calleman's thesis on the Mayan Calendar certainly helps. [I, for one, cannot imagine comprehending our times right now without Calleman's idea! I'm going to continue this site through the Winter Solstice 2012 mostly to reflect upon the nature of the new world that will be emerging after the end of the tun-based Calendar, October 28, 2011.] Right now, we are in the end of Night Three (Day Four opens June 25), and we are beginning to see the real implications of the Day Three sprouting: The Middle East is being totally reshaped by revolution; many countries, besides Japan, are seeking ways to shut down their nuclear reactors; and the world's financial systems are tottering. Arresting one key player after another for sexual peccadilloes will not hide the truth.

 

Meanwhile, the only thing that matters is how you live your life. Who do you love now? Are you faithful and devoted to each person you are connected to? Are you ready, at a moment's notice, to go right to those who need assistance from you? Do you trust the grand plan that is unfolding no matter what will happen in your personal life? During times like 2011, heroes are made. Or, are you sitting around groaning and waiting for the end of the world while you are doing nothing in your own life? I suppose if I could make a film that would characterize the current scene, it would be titled Waiting for Nibiru. Ironically, in the middle of silly apocalyptic fear, a popular film is popping up titled Tree of Life, and my dear friend Brian Swimme has announced his monumental film, The Universe Story, which premieres in September 2011! Surely we are living in a time of miracles! We are all invited to observe in wonder, breathe deeply, and enjoy the show!

 

This Summer Solstice chart is very musical, like an early medieval madrigal; when the theme of one planet is played, all the other planets sing along. This is because many planets are in a 0 to 10 degree range causing many more multiple aspects than usual. The Sun in 0 Cancer, for example, is exactly 30 degrees from Mars, while sextiling Jupiter; squaring Uranus; trining Neptune, Chiron, and Moon; and opposing Pluto! Quite a potent entry into summer, wouldn't you agree? The other notable character in this chart is its director-Saturn; he stands alone by the rising of the Washington, DC chart, while the other bodies are in a wide "bucket" with Saturn as the handle. Saturn directs the field of an impressive Grand Square involving Mercury/Sun in Cancer, Uranus in Aries, and Pluto in Capricorn. Saturn went direct on June 12 and is now moving forward to cross the 1776 USA Saturn on August 28 (see the USA chart at the end of this reading).

 

In late August, the world will be deeply immersed in the Night Five, the destruction phase of the universal. I have to wonder who set up this game? Often I wonder if the US could have avoided being central player in the National and Planetary Underworld game called Empire? But, it's not really about the US during the summer season-it's about a global emotional-body cleansing with Saturn in 10 Libra exactly quincunx the Moon in 10 Pisces. The Moon passes over Neptune/Chiron just before the Solstice, which means that we all will be experiencing acute emotional healing crises while the structures of the last 5,125 years crash and burn. Since Saturn is in Libra, this is the grand balancing, the grand culling. What could this be? For me, if we are in our hearts and coming from our hearts, we will exist in universal peace and joy. Those who are hard-hearted will be part of the culling. We are moving out of Homo Agressus into Homo Pacem; you are either a warrior or a peacemaker. It is each person's choice, it always was, yet now the field is shifting to peace and harmony.

 

We begin with the Sun moving into Cancer as a focus. Engaged in multiple aspects, its agenda is to seek comfort, joy, security, and nurturance. Mercury is 10 degrees just past the Sun, and so the Sun in Cancer comprehends itself and knows it wants total and enveloping nurturance. The Sun feels its power because it resonates freely with Mars in 0 Gemini, and the Sun is expanded and stabilized by a sextile from Jupiter in 3 Taurus (exact on June 25). Jupiter in Taurus is grounded and wise, so this sextile to the Sun (with Mars activating their midpoint) is like the song, "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin. Yet, as the Sun in Cancer sextiling Jupiter in Taurus lilts along, the Sun is kicked in the butt by a square from Uranus in 4 Aries (exact on June 26). Since the Sun in Cancer opposes Pluto in 6 Capricorn (exact on June 27), Uranus sits at the top of a T-square to Sun opposite Pluto. This tense T-square occurs while Uranus-square-Pluto is in close orb, so this summer will express the early stages of seven Uranus squares to Pluto that will come in 2012 and last until 2015. Described simply, this T-square suggests that this summer is when everyone on the planet will realize that the classic old ways are not coming back. Then Saturn in Libra opposing Uranus in Aries makes this T-square into a cardinal Grand Square, which anchors the shift into new realities. The exact aspects to the Sun and other planets go off like time-released capsules through June 27, so the new themes will be complex as well as very apparent-since Mercury is a strong player in the Grand Square.

 

As our species evolves with new cultural ways, old security blankets have to go. The most amazing thing about this Solstice chart is that it even indicates what the new patterns may be. The Sun in 0 Cancer exactly trines Neptune retrograde in 1 Pisces, which is close to Chiron in 5 Pisces; and the Moon in 10 Pisces has just passed over Neptune and Chiron. This is an exquisitely subtle planetary and lunar dance, like a sweet little Irish jig that dangles our future right in front of our noses. This Cancer/Pisces trine says it's time to heal (Chiron) our separation from spirit (Neptune), and the way to do it is to open our hearts (Sun/Mercury trine Moon). The most profound Cherokee teaching is in the stories about the "Two-Hearted's." From these stories, I learned that my people (Cherokee and Celtic) have endured because we live in our hearts no matter what the two-hearted ones-the conquerors-did to our people. We have endured; they never penetrated and split our hearts. And now, during this beautiful summer season, the end of dominant cruelty is coming for all of us.

 

No matter where I go in this marvellous Solstice chart, one theme just resonates with the next one. Using the Moon in Pisces as our focus, notice how she conjuncts Chiron/Neptune; exact trines Mercury in Cancer; squares Venus in 14 Gemini (exact about 8 hours after the Solstice); is exact quincunx Saturn in 10 Libra; and sextiles Pluto in 6 Capricorn. What does all this mean? Aspects to the Moon modulate our feelings, our hearts. Thus, the Moon with Chiron/Neptune means we are healers of the spiritual heart, and the trine to Mercury and the Sun in Cancer says our sense of self-knowing (Sun) is highly intelligent and evolved (Mercury). The lunar square to Venus in 14 Gemini may indicate this summer will be a time of female revolt in the bedroom. This may be the ultimate moment when men have to stop "warring and whoring" because the goddess refuses any more male-dominant abuse. Knowing the goddess, this aspect may also be played out through weather, such as with hurricanes. Finally, the Moon's exact quincunx to Saturn in Libra and her sextile to Pluto in Capricorn is simply stunning, repeating what I said before: the structures of the National and Planetary Underworlds are going out of form because nobody believes in them anymore. This message will be even stronger when people realize the gold has been stripped out of Fort Knox!

 

Using Jupiter as the focus, this great god of abundance sextiles the Sun in Cancer and Neptune/Chiron, and trines Pluto in Capricorn. This is a really dynamic configuration that offers great physical support for the great process of letting go of everything we have ever known or experienced. Grounded and solid Jupiter says our belief in ourselves as a species (Sun) is the source of our survival, and we can do this by activating our healing heart. With Jupiter in Taurus trining Pluto in Capricorn-two earth signs-we are reminded that the biological structures of Earth have gone extinct and then rejuvenated many times, and life has continued to evolve. This time is no different, yet because of the sextiles and trines to Neptune/Chiron/Moon, the human heart is the survivor this time. Trust in your feelings this summer, since they may be all you have! Also, Jupiter sextiling Moon/Chiron/Neptune forms a Yod to Saturn in Libra, and this empowers Saturn to balance and structure our feelings, so that we can utilize all of their great potential.

 

Now it is time to see things from Saturn's view, and suddenly we really see that this is a Grand Square Solstice. Saturn in 10 Libra opposes Uranus in 4 Aries, and they are in Grand Square to Mercury/Sun in Cancer opposite Pluto in Capricorn. Saturn in Libra exactly squares Mercury in 10 Cancer, which may be the most intriguing exact square in this chart. I left reading the Grand Square until now because I wanted you to feel some of the other aspects before putting the exact Mercury square Saturn into focus. Grand Squares are my favorite configuration because they always get the job done. Like the exact aim of GPS, they have amazing powers to alter the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual fields forever. This Grand Square during a seasonal shift means that after the summer of 2011 (which winter 2011 down south), we will think of history as before and after this moment. This Grand Square says: Our search for comprehending (Mercury) safety and nurturance (Sun in Cancer) occurs amidst radical change and disruption (Pluto), which is triggered by shifts in the fractal fields (Uranus), that all formulate into cellular homeostasis (balancing by Saturn's laws). Then the exact square of Mercury to Saturn shines the light on our human mentality, which means it's time to nurture the exquisite powers of our intelligence. Because the Mayan Calendar has been revealed just in time, its message is to trust Nature and the workings of the World Tree, our magnificent guide through the Universal Underworld.

 

Finally, let's note that we have clever Mars in 0 Gemini-in exact square to Nepture in Pisces-telling us how to act! Neptune is in retrograde and will move back into Aquarius in August until February 2012, when we can be sure the 2012 apocalyptical fools will be predicting doom and gloom. So, with Neptune in early activation of his role as the ultimate high spirituality (Gnosis), Mars moves into Gemini and quickens Neptune to the max; and Uranus is in sextile within the square, making sure that transformation is total. I would strongly suggest you review all of the successful spiritual tools you've already garnered because you are going to need them. Mars exactly squares Neptune in this chart, which means waves of enlightenment will be sweeping the fields of our planet. Remember to sit in lotus and accept this joy, and then you won't care whether the gold is in Fort Knox or floating in the atmosphere of Nibiru!

Cancer New Moon Solar Eclipse: July 1, 2011    View Chart

The New Moon in Cancer has arrived, the lunar activation of the June 21 Solstice, which north of the Equator is the emotional maturity of the strong Sun. In the solstice reading, I had fun playing with its magical field of vibrations, which was like a medieval madrigal. The solstice was absolutely revelatory for me this year, and during it I downloaded a compelling series of cosmic insights; these I share with you now as this lunation activates the midpoint of the Universal Underworld. Also, following the solstice, I noticed that some people close to me are turning their attention to prophecies of doom-and-gloom. Suddenly, segments of the New Age are becoming obsessed with the comets Honda and Elenin that are coming into our solar system this summer; some even suggest they are the fulfillment of the prophecies of the end times in Revelations. We hear wild tales of hail, fire, three days of darkness, and the avenging god, Jehovah demanding repentance! Meanwhile, I was basking in joyful goddess consciousness imagining Earth pulling comets, asteroids, and meteors into her complex folds, like a lover being seeded with sperm.

 

Those obsessed with old and moldy prophecies may miss the new cosmic revelations in our solar system. For example, in early June, Voyager I (after first leaving Earth in 1977) has finally made it out to the edge of the solar system (heliosphere). There, Voyager detected foamy magnetic bubbles 100 million miles in diameter that surround our solar system! (NASA Science News, June 9, 2011.) The Sun's magnetic field extends to the inner edge of the heliosphere, and its outer surface is gobs of self-contained bubbles, which is how we interface with the Milky Way Galaxy! You may recall me noting that when Day Seven of the Galactic Underworld opened in November 2010, NASA announced that the Galactic Center erupted two symmetrical bubbles on the vertical axis that contain the energy equivalent of 100,000 supernovas? (Astrophysical Journal, November 10, 2010). Instead of fear and contraction, I begin with these wonderful examples of the fruition of the Galactic Underworld, which help us understand our galactic habitation. We live in a universe of goddess bubbles, not in a prison filled with prophets crying of end times, doom-and-gloom, and catastrophe.

 

This New Moon is the third and last eclipse that encases our summer awakening, so it focuses and intensifies the enlivened, inspired, and hopeful harmonic fields that arrived on June 21. Yet, those waiting for the apocalypse are infected by what the Pleiadians call god poison-"You are a hopeless sinner in need of repentance and forgiveness for all your sins because you are stuck in a fear-based world." Thus, toxic people attach Judeo-Christian fundamentalist fanaticism to the arrival of the two comets in 2011. Sadly, this distracts us from our joyful and difficult climb to enlightenment during 2011. This dogma, soaked in guilt and the need for personal salvation, took over the early Roman Catholic Church during the fourth century, when patriarchal theologians distorted the heart-centered and cosmic teachings of Jesus. These beliefs became the core basis of the National Underworld religions that were generated in Rome on the midline. However, like all the National, Planetary, and Galactic systems that destroy Earth, male-dominant religious control is ending now. We can be sure of this because the systemic child abuse in the inner sanctums has been exposed. This knee-jerk reversion to doom-and-gloom may be the last picture show for those needing to froth up and pant once more as they wait for the apocalypse, but you also can choose to opt out. Regardless of what happens, most of us will wake up on October 29, 2011, and return to caring for our planet.

 

This latest apocalyptical fear insanity (catastrophobia) erupted during Night Three of the Universal. Now, during the proliferation phase of Day Four, we can use the powers of this Cancer solar eclipse to intentionally eliminate these last vestiges of god poison. In a just-released book, David Ian Cowan offers some good basic psychology: "The fears stirred up by discussions of planetary change and fundamental shifts in time and space are rooted in our physical bodies' ego-based survivalist programming. Some anthropologists say the ego evolved primarily out of our need to survive in a hostile environment, and it still operates largely in this mode. The ego actually wants you to think you are your body, and that the preservation of that body should be your primary concern." (Navigating the Collapse of Time) You are so much more than your body except when you all into fear; when you transcend fear and are in courage, you don't worry about the loss of your physical body. Judeo-Christian theology cleverly and seductively ensnares its believers in their bodies by preaching about the survival of the Chosen People, the Remnant of the End Times. Intriguingly, this New Moon expresses the power of our souls and spirits. It offers us energy to release ego and attachment to any outcome, including any form of ending. Let's move right into the heart of courage, the return of the goddess with the New Moon in Cancer.

 

During the June 21 solstice, the Sun going into Cancer opposed Pluto in Capricorn and squared Saturn in Libra opposite Uranus in Aries-a potent cardinal (initiating) grand square. Now, ten days later with this grand square still in place, the Moon in Cancer moves to the Sun. So, our desire for nurturance (Sun in Cancer), occurring amidst radical change (Pluto in Capricorn), within changing fractal fields (Uranus in Aries oppose Saturn in Libra), becomes an emotional crisis expressed by the Moon in Cancer. Thus, we feel all these elements shifting in the fractal fields. In response to studying the grand square, I say, it's time to get off the cross and return to living on Earth. We know this because the Sabian symbol for 10 Cancer [always read by advancing one degree] is a "large diamond not completely cut." (Marc Edmund Jones) This is the moment when we are ready to perfect ourselves by polishing the final facets of our souls to attain the cosmic meaning of life, the real purpose of the Universal Underworld. Since Cancer is our mother, the nurturer, we must cut away judgment and criticism on the facets of our diamond soul.

 

As we know from our studies of the Mayan Calendar, 2011 is the time for each one of us to move beyond all of the belief systems of the last 5,125 years that are not resonant with Earth. This includes removing our selves from the male dominant religions that claim God made a Covenant with humans to conquer nature, to exploit Earth. The arrival of the Moon in this grand square inspires us to really feel our love for Earth, so that we can place our hearts and minds in nature and feel her pain. Those presently obsessed with the wrath of the avenging God hurling comets at our planet miss feeling the joy of Earth expressing herself in synchronicity with cosmic events during the Universal. Whatever her expression will be, it will be ecstatic and beautiful.

 

Some may wonder what I really feel about religion and spirituality? For me, spirituality is ecstatic experiences with the divine within nature and all that is beyond. For me, the divine is what gives the universe life and it is therefore eternal, yet it penetrates our world even to the extent of creating the time-acceleration cycles characterized by the World Tree. I do not think I would know this if I didn't personally experience this force. Often I feel divine energy during cosmic creations, such as meteors, comets, asteroids, planetary synchronicities, and even earthquakes. For me, these creative expressions have no connection with the angry and punishing Judeo-Christian God, who is nothing more than a projection of unprocessed and dualistic human emotions, making the human ego into a deity. Since I feel these divine forces so strongly, sometimes I wonder if agnostics, atheists, and Judeo-Christian fundamentalists have any feeling or excitement in their hearts? Our attainment of Unity Consciousness this year has to be birthed in the heart, so I express great alarm when I see that two comets gracing our skies during 2011 are being used to instill fear, as well as to make a buck.

 

Let's lighten up and focus on astrology. Jupiter is lolling along in 5 Taurus feeling wonderful in a tight trine to Pluto in 6 Capricorn. This strong and earthy trine supports our personal and collective endeavors; it cheers us when we experience travail, which is the case with so many people right now. As I observe the floods in Minot, South Dakota, the bravery and trust of the people reaches into my heart. But, let us not miss the fact that these floods were gravely worsened by flood control projects the Army Corps of Engineers inflicted on the area years ago. In so many cases, the expected travails caused by nature are increased by man's interference, as we saw for example in Japan. Now during the Universal, nature is throwing off these shackles on her systems.

 

Jupiter also sextiles Chiron-conjunct-Neptune in Pisces, which offers strong spiritual support for those who are stressed personally by nature's release. I can feel this strength in some of the stories coming forth from people in Minot, and I feel like most of us will be part of this process this year. Jupiter sextiling the New Moon strengthens the power of the grand square, which is galvanizing new systems as old paths literally go underwater. The Cancer New Moon in this formative grand square will inspire a great heart opening in the flooded region. Previously I have noted that a crisis over nuclear power will build and build during the Universal-and as soon Day Four opened, two nuclear plants in Nebraska are in danger due to flooding; a huge fire threatens Los Alamos, New Mexico, where the Bomb was developed and where fissionable material are stored; and ABC News announced (on June 27) that three-quarters of US nuclear plants have had Tritium leaks in the past, a condition that continues to worsen. The midpoint of the Universal is July 3-4, when many will feel gratefulness for any security and nurturance they have; people will be thankful for the support of their families, friends, and communities. This eclipse activates the midpoint of the Universal, which will disseminate great heart openings that will inspire our true values, spirit, and courage. This energy could even turn the US away from playing empire, so that the country and the people can be valued as citizens again.

 

Mars in 7 Gemini, trining Saturn in 11 Libra, drives us to speak our truth and to seek justice and harmony: "Get off the suffering cross and take effective action in the world." Mars closely quincunxes Pluto in 6 Capricorn, a fascinating and formative influence. This uneasy alliance favors facile and quickened mental powers for separating out the complex elements of the old world that must pass away. It expresses the trying to figure out, the moment when we really see the light. This could be a really bad month for fundamentalist preachers because so many people have heard their rants just one too many times. If you've lost your home in Minot, are you waiting for the apocalypse? How are you feeling right now if you live near a nuclear power plant? In other words, an odd thing is going on that I sure would never have predicted: Now that so many people are experiencing their own personal apocalypses, waiting for the end isn't exciting any more, since it's already here. With new perspectives beyond the ego-based National Underworld religions, many people have quietly developed a new relationship with Christ as the divine immanent in nature. When you have a direct and nurturing relationship with the grace of a divine human fully incarnate in nature, the old dogma feels obscene, sticky, and controlling. In other worlds, many believe in miracles and divine teachers, they just don't need religion and prophets any more.

 

Of course, Venus is so important now because we have such a need for support and love. Well, our beautiful goddess is right on the Galactic Center at 27 Gemini, and the Galactic Center conjunct Venus is right on the ascendant for Washington, DC, while they all trine Neptune in Pisces at the mid-heaven. And, the lunar South Node in Gemini (bringing us wisdom from the ancient spirituality) is just above the Washington, DC, ascendant. The feminine elements in our world are crying out for respect, power, guidance, and freedom. When the solar light is eclipsed, the Moon in Cancer implants new feminine light, so this odd and potent Gemini configuration on the rising suggests something very significant and noticeable is going to happen in Washington this month. I imagine something like Congress finally listening to the mayors of US cities who have called for an end to the wars so they can get some resources to rebuild their communities. People are losing patience with building roads and bridges in Iraq and Afghanistan when they can't get across town anymore. Lastly, Mercury in 29 Cancer trines Uranus in 5 Aries, so the lower and higher mind are in good aspect; inspiration is flowing during the peak of the Universal!
